The 2017-18 NHL season is a quarter of the way through. While there are plenty of games to be played, we can now start to see which teams will be in the playoff hunt in a few months, and which teams may be already looking ahead to next season... Continue Reading
The NHL season is just about a quarter of the way complete, my boys in Black and Gold are doing... well, okay I suppose. The Bruins own an 8-7-4 record (20 points) and sit in fifth place in a top-heavy Atlantic division. Not an ideal start to the season, but when I consider the elephant in the room, I'll surely take it. The elephant here being, of course, the injuries. I hate to make injuries seem like an excuse for average play in any sport, but in this case it's pretty hard to make a claim to the contrary.... Continue Reading
Is it accurate to say that this World Series had it all? Let's see: Cy Young and MVP candidates, all-stars galore, and budding superstars? Yup. Extra-inning games, walk-off hits, pitchers' duels, comebacks, and a few high-powered shootouts? You bet. Seven games of World Series baseball between two 100 win teams for the first time 80 years? Yes sir. And let's not forget home run, after home run, after home run, after home run, after home run. If it were not for a relative dud of a Game 7, the series would have been nearly perfect in terms of pure entertainment.... Continue Reading
I first thought I should say that I love these teams, and go over what I like about each of them. But I realized that to do that would be the same process as describing why I enjoy certain TV shows or restaurants. Sports just do it for me, like Chick-fil-a or Breaking Bad.... Continue Reading
And so ends the John Farrell era in Boston. Whatever your opinion of him as a manager, let's give him credit where credit is due. Under his tenure, the Red Sox clinched three division titles and won the 2013 World Series. You can't take that away from him.
You also can't take away a couple dead-last finishes, either.... Continue Reading
Nothing beats some good ol' October baseball. The crisp fall air, the electric crowds, the unbelievable plays, and the unforgettable mistakes.
Good thing the MLB scheduled Boston's first two postseason games on weekday afternoons WHEN WE WILL ALL BE AT WORK. But those complaints are best saved for another time. Right now, I'd like to provide a quick breakdown of Boston's opening round matchup in the 2017 playoffs.... Continue Reading
They're in. The Red Sox have clinched the AL East title. Their prize? An ALDS matchup against the Houston Astros and their nearly unstoppable offense, led by AL MVP candidate Jose Altuve. To beat these guys will take a team effort for sure, but to me it's going to boil down to starting pitching. If the Sox can't get a few quality starts in this series, don't expect them to have offensive firepower to catch up to the Houston bats.... Continue Reading
The Red Sox are hanging on to the top spot AL East with less than a month to go in the regular season. The operative words here being "hanging on", as the Sox have watched their healthy lead over the Yankees dwindle behind some truly mediocre baseball, then widen right back to a comfortable 4.5 games after a few recent wins...
