Love conquers all. Odysseus and Penelope, Elizabeth Bennett and Darcy, Noah and Allie (yes, from “The Notebook”), and list that goes on and on. We can now happily add a classic hockey rivalry to the ranks: USA’s Meghan Duggan and Canada’s Gillian Apps!
Both women are incredible athletes and examples of the fierce females that play professional international hockey.
Duggan is a proud former Wisconsin Badger and in 2011, she won the Patty Kazmaier Award for best player in women’s NCAA hockey. She currently plays in the NWHL for the Boston Pride.
Today is a day to celebrate sportsmanship, strong women, and marriage equality all at the same time! And of course, the newlyweds themselves.
The pair tied the knot this past weekend in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in Pownal, Maine. Multiple teammates were in attendance and both teams have tweeted their congratulations to the happy couple. Duggan is the current captain for USA Women’s Hockey, most recently taking gold in the Pyeongchang Olympics.
This was the first US Women’s gold in 20 years. Though Apps retired as captain for Team Canada in 2014, the two met in the gold medal round multiple times and Apps took gold in both 2010 and 2014 from her future wife, clearing the way for Duggan to beat the curse in 2018.
So from all of us at the Turf: congratulations, Meghan and Gillian! Your storybook hockey careers and romance inspire us all. We hope you rode a Zamboni off into the sunset, towards your long and happy marriage to come!
