Love conquers all. Odysseus and Penelope, Elizabeth Bennett and Darcy, Noah and Allie (yes, from “The Notebook”), and list that goes on and on. We can now happily add a classic hockey rivalry to the ranks: USA’s Meghan Duggan and Canada’s Gillian Apps!

Both women are incredible athletes and examples of the fierce females that play professional international hockey.

Duggan is a proud former Wisconsin Badger and in 2011, she won the Patty Kazmaier Award for best player in women’s NCAA hockey. She currently plays in the NWHL for the Boston Pride.

Apps is descendent from NHL fame, with grandfather Syl Apps in the Hockey Hall of Fame and her father Syl Apps Jr was in the NHL for ten years. She attended Dartmouth, retired from professional play in 2015 and currently is on the coaching staff of the Boston College Eagles.

Today is a day to celebrate sportsmanship, strong women, and marriage equality all at the same time! And of course, the newlyweds themselves.

The pair tied the knot this past weekend in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in Pownal, Maine. Multiple teammates were in attendance and both teams have tweeted their congratulations to the happy couple. Duggan is the current captain for USA Women’s Hockey, most recently taking gold in the Pyeongchang Olympics.

This was the first US Women’s gold in 20 years. Though Apps retired as captain for Team Canada in 2014, the two met in the gold medal round multiple times and Apps took gold in both 2010 and 2014 from her future wife, clearing the way for Duggan to beat the curse in 2018.

So from all of us at the Turf: congratulations, Meghan and Gillian! Your storybook hockey careers and romance inspire us all. We hope you rode a Zamboni off into the sunset, towards your long and happy marriage to come!

Sarah Jane, Sarah, or SJ-depending on the source-is a director, educator, theatre artist and now, sports blogger. She lives in Queens with her darling, not-so-sports-fan boyfriend. She played ice hockey growing up for the NJ Quarry Cats and various other teams. Being team captain her last two seasons is the most important achievement of her life to date. She proudly also was about a quarter of the size of her opponents and often led her team in both penalty minutes and enthusiasm. She's a Pittsburgh Penguins and Steelers fan (thanks, Momma!) and a New York Yankees fan (thanks, Poppa?) and was given zero choice on all three of these teams. Other hobbies include reading non-fiction books, cooking, and being spunky. Check in with her for all your greater hockey needs!
