In a day during which we’ve seen a wider spread of COVID-19, aka Coronavirus, affecting large gatherings around the world, the NBA has announced that they are suspending the season following this evening’s scheduled games. This comes almost immediately on the heels of the NCAA announcing that March Madness would happen behind closed doors.
It’s odd to see this news as I’m watching the Denver Nuggets play the Dallas Mavericks. And cameras picking up Mark Cuban apparently reacting to the news he’s seeing about the suspension on his phone. “It just seems more like a movie than reality. I trust Adam. It’s not about basketball or money. You want to make sure you’re doing this the right way. Now it’s much more personal. This is much bigger than just the NBA.” Cuban said during an in-game interview in the fourth quarter.
This news comes after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert has tested positive for the virus. About 45 minutes before the Jazz were set to tip off against the Thunder in Oklahoma City, officials were made aware of Gobert’s diagnosis. Teams were immediately sent back to their locker rooms, and are now quarantined at OKC arena.
I can’t speak to the legitimacy of this tweet, but if it’s real I’m sure players in OKC and Utah are going to be pretty angry with Rudy.
The official reports
We’ve already reported on the NCAA, as I mentioned above, and Serie A. I’d expect to see the dominos continue to fall across multiple sports both inside and outside the US.
The NBA dropped this statement shortly after the reports started to be made public.
I agree with Cuban. It’s crazy to watch. It really does feel like we’re living in some kind of movie or tv show. Beyond the league, Tom Hanks has posted on social media that he and wife Rita Wilson have tested positive and are now quarantined in Australia, where Hanks is filming a movie about Elvis. President Trump has suspended travel from Europe for 30 days starting this Friday, March 13th.
Enjoy the end of this game in Dallas.
EDIT: The New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings has been postponed.
This is likely just the beginning, y’all. Buckle in. Who knows how long this suspension will last.
