Breaking Angles: Vikings Trade DE Ngakoue To Ravens

Estimated Reading Time: 3 Minutes

Today I logged onto twitter expecting the typical doom and gloom. I was not disappointed. Sure, there was still the typical pandemic/election tire fire but there was also information about my favorite sports team.

The Trade

Just 3 months after trading for star pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue from the Jaguars, where they gave up a 2021 2nd rounder and conditional 5th rounder, the Vikings moved him to the Ravens for a 2021 3rd rounder and conditional 5th rounder. Wheelin’ dealin’ Rick Spielman has done it again!

What a massive coup for the Vikings. Any time you can trade premium draft capital to avoid an inevitable rebuild to then dump it moments later for pennies on the dollar you have to do it. That’s franchise building 101.

Some will look at this as a panic move. Some will say the Vikings never should have made the move in the first place. Others will note that with Kirk Cousins as your franchise quarterback you never had a shot to begin with and should have been sellers in the offseason, not buyers. Not tricky Rick. He doesn’t roll that way. The eternal optimist, this glass of shit was half full in his eyes. I can’t help but respect it.

I can’t blame Rick – I had my purple colored blinders on too. Just a few short months ago I predicted the Vikings would win 10 games (lol what an idiot). Granted I have not been entrusted with the reigns of a multi billion dollar franchise, just a blog that I dip in and out of like a starlet in rehab. We are not the same. Hindsight is the only arrow in my quiver and I will wield it with the confidence of a post ER Clooney.

What Does It Mean?

Does this mean the sky is falling? Yes, but no more than usual as far as a Vikings fan is concerned. I have chosen to look at this with the same undeserved idealism as before. In my beaten and battered fan mind this means they realized their mistake and that this team, as currently constituted, is going nowhere. This is the first step in a massive tank job. I believe we will be seeing more moves from Rick in the coming days. Maybe moving Riley Reiff, Anthony Harris or Kyle Rudolph. Gather as many draft picks as possible, leave the team even more devoid of talent for the remainder of the season and pray to whatever deity you choose that the Jets somehow fall ass backwards into a couple of wins.

What Will Happen

While I remain foolishly hopeful, what I know will happen is the Vikings WILL move more people and they WILL lose games and they WILL acquire more draft picks, but it wont matter. They will win a meaningless game in the last week of the season costing them a top pick and an opportunity to get out of quarterback purgatory.

They will edge us until the last possible moment of the season. Dangle this chance to make things better in front of our dumb purple covered faces and snatch it away at the last moment. It is the Viking way. I am already prepared for it and, because I have zero self esteem, part of me even welcomes it. It is and always will be this way. If you are a Vikings fan you know this. Nothing I’ve said here is new. Luckily I accepted this long ago. I plan on just enjoying the ride on this unfinished roller coaster until the bottom eventually falls out. God speed, Rick, God speed.

Josh grew up in the midwest and upon graduating from the University of Iowa he wanted to see the world. After 4 years in Jacksonville he decided he was cultured enough and moved on to Birmingham England (known to the locals as the Detroit of the UK) and then west to San Francisco before settling in NYC. He pays his bills working in finance making sure the 1% remains on top. When he is not selling his soul and unable to look himself in the mirror, he spends his time writing mean things about sports while his dog, Sweet Dee, silently judges from her spot on the couch. He is very biased and never wrong. He would also like to thank Rotowire for never changing their NBA League Pass and MLB.TV passwords from that year when he was an NBA Beat Writer for the Nuggets for some reason.
