Turkey Day brings DraftKings Turf Wars: The Believe Bowl

Estimated Reading Time: 9 Minutes

We’re taking a little break from our weekly Humans VS Computer series, and decided to have an all-out Turf war as we fill up on Turkey and do our best to stay awake for both games. COVID has thrown us a curveball by pushing the Steelers and Ravens to Sunday following positive tests for Mark Ingram II and J.K. Dobbins.

So, here we are. Thanksgiving Day. Filling ourselves with Turkey, stuffing, booze, and the hope that we take home the first-ever, coveted, Believe Bowl crown.

THE LINEUPS

*Lineups have been adjusted since publishing based on game day inactives

I’ll keep this short and sweet.  There’s a bit too much blue and white in this lineup for my liking but considering that covid is currently feasting on the Ravens in a similar fashion to how we’ll all be feasting on our turkey dinners I wasn’t left with much choice. I’m going to have to rely on a shaky Lions offense that will either boom or bust and a feisty Washington defense. This lineup somehow still has the potential to be better than the actual product that the Lions put on the field Thursday.

QB: Matthew Stafford- $5,800
RB: Ezekiel Elliott – $6,800
RB: Kerryon Johnson – $4,300
WR: CeeDee Lamb – $5,400
WR: Marvin Jones, Jr. – $5,500
WR: Terry McLaurin – $7,000
TE: T.J. Hockenson – $4,700
FLEX: Will Fuller V – $6,400
D/ST: Washington Football Team – $3,700

I’m going cheap at DST, in order to spread the wealth around pass catching backs and high volume WRs. Targets is the name of my game this week, so I’m leaning on high-volume pass catchers like McLaurin, McKissic, and Cooks. Also, I apparently have the unconscious strategy of avoiding anyone who plays for the Lions. GOBBLE GOBBLE Y’ALL.

QB: Deshaun Watson – $7,400
RB: Ezekiel Elliot – $6,800
RB: J.D. McKissic – $5,100
WR: Amari Cooper – $5,700
WR: Will Fuller V – $6,400
WR: Terry McLaurin – $7,000
TE: Jordan Akins – $2,900
FLEX: Brandin Cooks – $5,300
D/ST: Houston Texans – $2,700

I am going with Stafford strictly for the “playing on Thanksgiving” experience. Zeke is too expensive and I don’t think his performance will be worth it so I went with Gibson and Johnson, both of whom I think will get TDs. I am going for some Moss in 1998 vibes with Lamb, and am taking MJJ because Golladay is out. All of the TEs are TD-dependent to me, so I went with Hockenson because I had the extra money. Finally, I took McLaurin because I love my name and I love famous people who share my name.

QB: Matthew Stafford – $5,800
RB: Antonio Gibson – $6,000
RB: Duke Johnson – $5,700
WR: Terry McLaurin – $7,000
WR: CeeDee Lamb – $5,400
WR: Marvin Jones, Jr. – $5,500
TE: T.J. Hockenson – $4,700
FLEX: Will Fuller V – $6,4000
D/ST: Houston Texans – $2,700

Before the Ravens/Steelers game was canceled, I had a very balanced lineup between all three games. Two game slates bug me, so I tried to maximize the number of big-name, high-scoring options I could. I got this lineup. It feels like a winner, but like most DFS lineups… it probably isn’t.

QB: Matthew Stafford – $5,800
RB: Kerryon Johnson – $4,300
RB: Antonio Gibson – $6,000
WR: Terry McLaurin – $7,000
WR: Marvin Jones, Jr. – $5,500
WR: Amari Cooper – $5,700
TE:  T.J. Hockenson – $4,700
FLEX: Ezekiel Elliot – $6,800
DST: Washington DST – $3,700

This DFS lineup is brought to you by ugly football. With the marquis matchup of Thanksgiving being moved to Sunday due to COVID, we’re left with two less than attractive games to consume along with our turkey. I have to be honest – without Baltimore and Pittsburgh in the mix, most of the decisions weren’t terribly difficult for me. Deshaun as a dual threat with his arm and legs was a no-brainer. Zeke is the stud RB of the lot, especially with D’Andre Swift still questionable thanks to a concussion.

The WRs were probably my toughest choices, but the budget with only the two games allowed me to fit in most of my first choice options. My FLEX choice was a coin flip and the Washington defense has been pretty solid, so I tapped them to round out my squad. Of course, given how 2020 has gone, the Lions will dominate Houston and Dallas v. Washington will feel like it used to back when teams in the NFC East were good.

QB: Deshaun Watson – $7,400
RB: Ezekiel Elliott – $6,800
RB: Antonio Gibson – $6,000
WR: Brandin Cooks – $5,300
WR: CeeDee Lamb – $5,400
WR: Terry McLaurin – $7,000
TE: T.J. Hockenson – $4,700
FLEX: Steven Sims, Jr. – $3,200
D/ST: Washington Football Team – $3,700

I was actually surprised by how many quality players I was able to get in this lineup. I consider Fuller, Cooper and McLaurin all WR1, and Watson probably the QB with the highest ceiling, especially against the Lions. I went with the Texans defense after seeing what Carolina did to the Lions last week.

QB: Deshaun Watson – $7,400
RB: Ezekiel Elliott – $6,800
RB: Antonio Gibson – $6,000
WR: Amari Cooper – $5,700
WR: Will Fuller V – $6,400
WR: Terry McLaurin – $7,000
TE: Jordan Akins – $2,900
FLEX: Adrian Peterson – $4,700
D/ST: Houston Texans – $2,700

Oh, Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday.  Food, drinking, football, and daily fantasy!  I love the 3 game slate for DFS, it’s the only day I consistently cash on.  Unsure why but don’t look a gift horse in the mouth or whatever that stupid saying is.  Listen to me over the rest of these fools and thank me later.

I am going a bit of a Houston stack with Watson at QB, Duke Johnson at RB then Cooks and Fuller as 2 of my 3 wideouts.  The Texans may stink but that offense is still explosive and it’s the Lions, come on.  My big money RB play is Zeke.  If the Cowboys want to stand a chance it isn’t Andy Dalton who is leading the way, it’s their overpriced running back.  I wanted Dobbins here but the moment I submitted this he was ruled out due to COVID. I retooled with Duke.  All in on those Texans.

The only real risk here is playing Swift in my flex.  He didn’t play last week because of a concussion and his availability is still up in the air.  If he cannot go, I’m swapping him out for Gibson.  Not much of a drop-off but I like Swift’s upside if he’s right.

QB: Deshaun Watson – $7,400
RB: Duke Johnson – $5,700
RB: Ezekiel Elliot – $6,800
WR: Brandin Cooks – $5,300
WR: Will Fuller V – $6,400
WR: Marvin Jones Jr – $5,500
TE:  Logan Thomas – $3,500
FLEX: Antonio Gibson – $6,000
D/ST:Cowboys DST – $2,800

I’m hoping to get another big week out of CeeDee Lamb, and hoping Keke Coutee separates me from the rest of the pack. I’m sure ownership will be high, but I have Zeke and Gibson in my Turf Fantasy team. Therefore I’m riding with them both here as well, with J.D. McKissic flexing. I’ll be storming to a big first place finish just as I awaken from my first (okay, maybe second) tryptophan nap.

QB: Andy Dalton – $5,600
RB: Ezekiel Elliott – $6,800
RB: Antonio Gibson – $6,000
WR: Keke Coutee – $3,400
WR: Marvin Jones, Jr. – $5,500
WR: CeeDee Lamb – $5,400
TE: T.J. Hockenson – $4,700
FLEX: J.D. McKissic – $5,100
D/ST: Detroit Lions – $2,200

I believe this to be the winner of the whole damn thing. If so I will need to speak with my editor about this 20$ arrangement. Alex Smith is going to shred the Cowboys hapless defense. Taking Alex Smith allowed for me to spend more at the skill positions such as Terry McLaurin, Antonio Gibson and Amari Cooper. I’m not a big believer in Schultz at tight end but I’m hopeful he gives us something to be thankful for.

QB: Alex Smith – $5,400
RB: Ezekiel Elliot – $6,800
RB: Antonio Gibson – $6,000
WR: Amari Cooper – $5,700
WR: Will Fuller V. – $6,400
WR: Terry McLaurin – $7,000
TE: Dalton Schultz – $3,800
FLEX: Adrian Peterson – $4,700
D/ST: Washington Football Team – $3,700

So basically it goes a little something like this. To win DK you gotta do what you hope others won’t. Assuming most will go for Zeke. If you’ve watched any Cowboys games (I’ve unfortunately seen a few) you know Zeke maybe the week link. Enter Tony Pollard who I think could be gravy on Thanksgiving Day.  Toss in Amari, Watson and CeeDee Lamb as the entrees, add in a dash of Scary Terry for a late game TD to carve up the Cowboys and I think I have the recipe for a very happy Thanksgiving.

QB: Deshaun Watson – $7,400
RB: Duke Johnson – $5,700
RB: Tony Pollard – $4,000
WR: Amari Cooper – $5,700
WR: Brandin Cooks – $5,300
WR: CeeDee Lamb – $5,400
TE: T.J. Hockenson – $4,700
FLEX: Terry McLaurin – $7,000
D/ST: Washington Football Team – $3,700

Deshaun Watson has been lights out since Bill O’Brien’s firing after Week 4. Watson’s thrown 14 TDs to just 2 INTs during that span. Going with the hot hand here. Antonio Gibson is questionable with an ankle injury right now, but it appears he may be good to go for Thursday. Really like Gibson here against a Cowboys defense that’s been one of the worst against the run this season. Ezekiel Elliott was a bit quiet the last meeting with Washington, but this time I think he does better. Dalton under center helps as well; rather than Ben DiNucci. Will Fuller‘s A big-play receiver against a Detroit team that loves giving up big plays. Count me in. Marvin Jones Jr. has racked up four TDs in his past four games. When Kenny Golladay is out (which there’s a good chance he will be again) Jones Jr. is Stafford’s most reliable target. I like Hockenson here for a decent value pick. Not a big yardage tight end, but definitely a threat in the red zone. Here’s to hoping he finds the end zone on Thursday.

QB: Deshaun Watson – $7,400
RB: Ezekiel Elliot – $6,800
RB: Antonio Gibson – $6,000
WR: Will Fuller V – $6,400
WR: Brandin Cooks – $5,300
WR: Marvin Jones Jr – $5,500
TE: T.J. Hockenson – $4,700
FLEX: Dalton Schultz – $3,800
D/ST: Washington Football Team – $3,700

What do you do when you were banking on a bunch of Ravens and Steelers to hold down your DFS lineup? You lean into the terrible run defenses that will be on the field during the DET/HOU game. And if I’m gonna lose (I am) I might as well go down rooting for my team (as pathetic as they are). Oh, and you should never trust the Dallas offense this season, but I needed to include some member of their team to satisfy some self-imposed rule, so why not a TE. This lineup clearly looks like I picked people solely based on the OPRK being green. I didn’t (because that’s usually a terrible strategy), but here we are.

QB: Matthew Stafford – $5,800
RB: Duke Johnson – $5,700
RB: Adrian Peterson – $4,700
WR: Brandin Cooks – $5,300
WR: Terry McLaurin – $7,000
WR: Cam Sims – $3,300
TE: Dalton Schultz – $3,800
FLEX: Kerryon Johnson – $4,300
D/ST: Washington Football Team – $3,700

I’m at the point in my fantasy season where I stupidly stop trusting my gut and follow the experts like a soulless lemming. Every week it seems I’m promised Duke Johnson will have 500 yards and 10 touchdowns only to basically have next to nothing.  Alas, I am again going with the experts here with DJ. Also, give me Darren Fells today with 1 target, 1 yard, and 1 touchdown.

QB: Deshaun Watson – $7,400
RB: Antonio Gibson – $6,000
RB: Duke Johnson – $5,700
WR: Terry McLaurin – $7,000
WR: CeeDee Lamb – $5,400
WR: Marvin Jones, Jr. – $5,500
TE: Darren Fells – $2,700
FLEX: J.D. McKissic – $5,100
D/ST: Houston Texans – $2,700
