New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick was scheduled to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom this Thursday.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award bestowed by the President of the United States to recognize people who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
However, on Monday, Belichick put out a statement turning down the award.
I’m not exactly sure what Bill has done to even receive it. He is historically private, and isn’t known for his acts of charity nor his personality. I’d like to say it’s my own, but the previous line is courtesy of my buddy Andy.
The fact is, his only real credentials are that he is a friend of Trump, and he happens to be one who leads a group of Black men.
In the past week, we’ve seen some insane things within this country. Violent insurrection took place at our nation’s Capitol Building. Many Republicans in Congress rejected the lawful results of an election.
Other Republicans have been praised simply for believing in our democracy. That’s not courage. That’s the bare minimum you’re supposed to do as a lawfully elected official.
Do you know what else isn’t courage? Turning down the Medal of Freedom. Sure, it’s great that Bill has rejected accepting this award. But that’s the right thing to do. However our focus needs to be elsewhere
Somehow, in the midst of a horrifying National crisis, the President of the United States is doling out the Medal of Freedom to golfers and sports figures who are likely to have voted for him.
This is genuinely insane to me. Coronavirus hospitalizations are rising every day. Terror is sweeping the nation. Adam Johnson, the guy who smiled while carrying a lectern out of the Capitol building, is out on bond. And some are worried the call is coming from inside the house. Two Capitol Police officers have been suspended, while many others are under investigation.
But here we are, caring about the fact that an NFL coach turned down something that I don’t understand what his qualifications were to receive in the first place.
It’s time to get our priorities straight.
What Bill Belichick does or doesn’t do truly doesn’t matter. This isn’t about what an NFL coach has done. We all have seen video from last week’s insurrection of Eugene Goodman, a Capitol Police Officer and a Black man, using himself as bait to lure Trump’s terrorists away from the Senate floor. That man is a hero. Eugene Goodman deserves the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
We’re playing with fire. And while we do that, we’re going on with our lives as if we’re watching the news of a foreign country. The NFL is continuing on with their precious playoffs while the FBI is warning that armed rallies are planned in all 50 state capitols between January 16-20.
But sure, let’s sigh a breath of relief that we don’t have to cancel an NFL coach who has already been canceled by everyone who doesn’t support his team.
