Breaking News: The NFL is Still Garbage

Estimated Reading Time: 4 Minutes

Welcome to my anger.

The NFL just handed down it’s suspension for Kareem Hunt, the former Kansas City Chiefs running back, and current Cleveland Browns running back, who was suspended and then cut from the Chiefs after video of him assaulting a woman in the hotel that he lived in resurfaced during the 2018 NFL season.

Kareem Hunt will sit out 8 games, half of the NFL season as punishment for his actions.

How much longer are we going to take this nonsense? For real. How much longer? I need to know, because I feel like I’m losing my mind. If you don’t care about the league, or just watch football for the fantasy aspect, you’re kidding yourself. We should not be casually supporting a league that doesn’t care if a player beats the crap out of a woman off the field as long as his yards per carry is above 5.

Yes, my team’s owner is embroiled in a scandal of his own, and ya know what? I hope the NFL throws the goddamn book at Robert Kraft. I AM ALL ABOUT THAT. I’m here for that all day, every day.

But if a player peacefully protests against police brutality against minorities? No way they can allow that. But this isn’t about Kaepernick. This is about Kareem Hunt, the man who shoved a woman and then kicked her in the face, being suspended for eight games and still being allowed to play on the Cleveland Browns, a team that has a decent shot of making it to the playoffs next season.

What are we doing here?!

When this video broke, the question was not why would Hunt do such a vicious and heinous thing to this woman, but the question was “What did the Chiefs know? And when did they know it?” AS IF THAT ACTUALLY MATTERS. One of your players beat a woman, and you kept them on the field while your team plowed through the competition all the way to being a breath away from the Super Bowl. And we’re just gonna let this one slide?

When the Ray Rice video leaked we all knew the Ravens knew about it. We all knew that. So when he got 2 games for knocking out his wife and dragging her unconscious body into an elevator, we all thought… the Ravens knew and the NFL knew too. After that, the Ravens cut Ray Rice and he hasn’t played a goddamn snap in the NFL since, and thank God for that.

Yet, Kareem Hunt already had a contract from a different team. When Hunt was snatched up by the Browns most pundits and fans said “well, Cleveland’s taking a risk.” WHAT ACTUAL F**KING RISK!?! THE GUY KICKED A WOMAN IN THE FACE. WHAT RISK?! THAT HE’LL GET SUSPENDED?

Immediately we forget that these men are just stats to all of us, and not actual human beings. Kareem Hunt didn’t matter, in the same way that Spencer Ware suddenly mattered to everyone after Kareem was released by the Chiefs post video discovery. The NFL doesn’t care about doing the right thing, they care about doing nothing.

The incident involving Kareem Hunt and this woman in a hotel happened almost a year before the video came out, which means that the team and the league sat on this. There’s no other way to look at it. If a coworker or employee of yours got into an altercation that involved the police, I highly doubt that it would take a year for you to find out about it, or to find out what actually happened. That’s not reality. That’s a fantasy.

And if these players don’t matter, then the women abused by them matter even less to the NFL. That is something that I, as a fan of the game of football, simply cannot live with. And quite frankly, I would hope that the majority of the people reading this would agree with that.

Julian Edelman was suspended four games for using PEDs. He was the Super Bowl MVP last February. The NFL never cared about doing the right thing, they only care about doing what’s right for them. Why do I know that? Because these stories are becoming a dime a dozen.

Meanwhile, Josh Gordon is suspended indefinitely for testing positive for marijuana. GET REAL.

The NFL is a goddamn joke, and I’m no longer laughing.
