I Know I Shouldn’t, But This Is Why I Read The Comments

Recently, one of our readers decided to put their comments on an old article. They were vile, and we will not approve them to be published.

I Know I Shouldn’t, But This Is Why I Read The Comments

Estimated Reading Time: 2 Minutes

About a year and a half ago, I wrote an article asking the simple question: Why is there so much hate for the USWNT? Time has passed, and I’d nearly forgotten about this piece. One that calls out the women’s national team as a group of heroes.

Recently, I saw a notification about a comment on that piece. I got excited. After all, the She Believes Cup wass underway. Then I read it, and all happiness left my soul. I was angry. Everything in me wanted to take this person’s email and put them on blast. Find their employer. Tear them down.

Why, do you ask? Because this comment said that these women are terrorists and called for their team plane to crash.

What is wrong with people?

These women are heroes and role models for young humans all over the country.

Maybe it’s the fact that I watched last month as a spineless US Senate acquitted a President who incited a violent insurrection. For that act alone, I hope whatever that vile man has on them comes to light. Maybe it’s the fact that those same Senators are trying to equate white terrorists with peaceful protesters in the Black Lives Matter movement. Perhaps the fact that one of them just left the country for Mexico while the people he represents were in a state of emergency.

I don’t know.

What I do know is that I’m tired of people hurling insults at people who don’t look, think, or act like them. Sure, I have been known to speak my mind and get riled up. But I don’t wish death upon anyone. And I’m tired of the attempts to hold our athletes to a higher standard than our politicians, yet also expecting them to sit down, shut up, and respect a flag as if World War II just ended. The lack of empathy so many in this country show is exhausting. And, frankly, I’ll never understand it.

So instead of putting this person on blast publicly, I want you to know that we saw this comment, and couldn’t let it slide. But it would be stooping to his level to do what I originally wanted. If you disagree with something we write, please, by all means, comment. But if you take that to the level of run of the mill internet trolls who will say anything behind the guise of a keyboard? Your comments will never make it on to our site, and we will once again remind our readership that we won’t stand for it.
