Hump Day Hot Takes: 10.4.17

Estimated Reading Time: 6 Minutes

Well, it’s that time of the year that is best. October. NFL starts to actually look like football instead of preseason. College football provides plenty of excitement every weekend. The NBA and NHL start their seasons. And MLB enters Postseason. I love it. As an aside, since the team here at 3U3D will be providing in depth coverage of all things MLB PostSeason, there will not be hot takes of those games unless something so incredibly mind-boggling happens that I can in no way refrain from commenting. Let’s get into it.

What Does the Future Hold for Stanton In Miami?

The probable NL MVP finished his season with an impressive stat sheet. .281 BA, 59 HR, 132 RBI, 123 Runs, 1.007 OPS. Those are monster numbers for a guy who played on a team that 8 games below .500. In a press conference Derek Jeter has already gone on record saying his believes the team needs to rebuild. “We do have to rebuild the organization,” Jeter said. “It starts with player development and scouting. We will build it from top down and bottom up.” He would also say this when asked specifically about Stanton: I don’t know him well. I haven’t spoken to the players. I haven’t spoken to him. Anything we’re going to do moving forward with the organization, I will discuss with Mike.[Hill, Marlins team President.]” And for his part, Giancarlo had this to say, “I don’t want to rebuild… I’ve lost for seven years.” Yikes. I wouldn’t be surprised if the trade talks haven’t already unofficially begun behind closed doors. As I said back at the trade deadline it only makes sense for the Marlins and Stanton to part ways. He is only on the 3rd year of a heavily, HEAVILY backloaded 13 year deal. He is still owed $285million. That’s a large chunk of change for a team trying to completely overhaul everything. And Stanton deserves to play for a team with legitimate title chances. His extreme talents are only being wasted in South Beach. Unfortunately, by not getting a deal done at the Deadline, now the organization has to once again explain to its fans why its getting rid of the only thing good about their team. Sorry Miami.

It was a bad week to be an NFC North RB

Oh man, if you or someone you care about had Dalvin Cook as the surprise star of his fantasy team, give that person a hug. Or buy them a drink. Or both. Cook was looking like the best all purpose rookie in a class that also includes Kareem Hunt, and the Vikings offense was thriving with him in the backfield. That all changes now as Vikings’ coach Mike Zimmer has confirmed Cook has a torn ACL and will be done for the season. Lataviaus Murray will now be the primary back in Minnesota, though he himself is not 100%.

The Packers fared marginally better as they sustained injuries to both Ty Montgomery and Jamaal Williams on Thursday Nights win over Da Bears. Montgomery looks to miss a couple games with a rib injury and Jamaal Williams’ injury to his knee may keep him out of this weeks matchup against the Cowboys leaving rookie Aaron Jones to handle the bulk of the load in Dallas.

In Detroit, Ameer Abdullah was on his way to being the first Lions back to have a 100 yard rushing day since Reggie Bush did it IN 2013! he finished the day with 93 yards because he came out of the game with an apparent ankle injury in the 4th quarter. Both he and Jim Caldwell played down the injury saying that he was even cleared to go back into that game if they needed him, but c’mon. He only needed 7 yards. Think of all the extra points he could’ve gotten my fantasy team’s bench. Sigh.

Chicago Bears’ running back Jordan Howard did not get injured on Thursday but he plays for the Bears and I maintain that is injury enough.

QB Change in the Windy City

Speaking of the Bears, it was announced on Monday that head coach John Fox announce that 1st Round Draft Pick Mitchell Trubisky would be the started for the Bears game against the Vikings this week on Monday Night Football. This is actually the perfect time for this switch as Glennon has been bad through 4 weeks and the extremely long week of Thursday Night to Monday Night gives the rookie qb plenty of time in practice with the first team and the game plan. Add in a weakened Vikings team (see above), and maybe things will start to look better in Chicago. Not likely, but maybe.

Antonio Brown

For the sake of the coolers and my one of my fantasy teams, please throw AB the ball.

The Patriots Defense is the Worst In The League

Look at that video. Remember, this is a team coached by the Hoodie Himself, Bill Belichick. His defenses aren’t supposed to get confused like that. No NFL defense is supposed to get confused like that. This is the worst defense in the league. Goddamn that’s a fun thing to say. THE PATRIOTS DEFENSE IS RANKED 32ND IN THE NFL. Pure joy.

LSU Geaux Neaux-where
LSU had their homecoming game this week. They paid Troy University $985K to be their opponent. These are so called “guarenteed games” where big schools pay tiny programs, typicall FCS teams, a sum of money to be their opponet because odds are high the smaller school is going to get creamed. At least that’s what’s supposed to happen. But these smaller schools always show up to play and well, LSU lost to Troy 24-21. Troy then sent out this tweet:

I couldn’t make this up if I tried. Someone give whoever runs Troy’s social media a raise, there should be some extra money floating around.

Lamar Ball
I could probably dedicate an entire column to the Ball family and the antics of their patriarch. But that seems silly to me. So unless it involves something happening on court with Lonzo and the Lakers, I am going to do my best to not comment on it. But pulling LaMelo out of high school and going on a tirade about the coach and principle of the school? Bad form, even from someone running the Big Baller Brand.

USMNT World Cup Qualifying

This weekend is big for the USMNT (which stands for the United States Men’s National Team, which is soccer) with their final two games in the Hex, which is CONCACAF’s World Cup qualifying tournament. The USMNT is currently in 4 place in the 6 team table, with the top 3 teams qualifying for the World Cup and the 4th place team going to a 1 game play in against either Austria or Syria. Sadly, at this point the USMNT don’t completely control their own destiny. The chances of them getting in are still good, but they cannot make any mistakes. If they win Friday against Panama and Sunday at Trinidad and Tobago then they should move into 3rd as the likelihood of Honduras beating Mexico and/or Costa Rica by the margins required to make up the goal differential are slim to none. There’s further in depth analysis of how shaky the US has looked over the early Hex matches, but I am deciding to ween us slowly into footy talk.

Morata Injured
If you know someone who is a Chelsea FC fan (like myself) give them a hug as Alvaro Morata could miss more than a month with a hamstring injury. This is crushing news for a team that was looking even better than I thought they would. Alright Michy Batshuayi, time to prove you’re as good as you like to Tweet you are.
