Hump Day Hot Takes: April 26, 2017

Estimated Reading Time: 3 Minutes

After a tech week hiatus we’re back for another edition of Hump Day Hot Takes.

Chris Coughlin is my hero.
For years I’ve had dreams of what is the most spectacular thing I could imagine happening in baseball. Someone diving over the catcher to score. Well, last night it happened. Just watch it. And then watch it 2 more times like I have. And then show all your friends. And then all your enemies. Spread the joy that is the greatest single play you may ever see in your lifetime.

So that’s why they call it Beantown…
Okay, if you remotely follow baseball then you know all about what happened over the weekend between the Orioles and the Red Sox. In case you don’t, basically Manny Machado took a late hard slide into second and hit Dustin Pedroia in his surgically repaired leg with his spikes. Pedroia missed the rest of the series and everyone knew that the next day Machado was going to have curveballs thrown at his knees. Which is precisely what happened. And then Matt Barnes, a large man who is payed to throw a hard object with great speed and and accuracy, launched a fastball at one of the greatest young players in the game’s head. In no way is that okay. JaCoby Jones took a fastball to the face over the weekend on accident and said he felt lucky to be alive. To intentionally go there is next level Evil. And of course the O’s and BoSox play each other a lot this year. Next week in fact is their next meet up. This story is far from over but it needs to be. This isn’t fun like Odor punching Bautista. There is some dangerous shit going on and everyone is going nuts defending their guys. Except Pedroia who remains a class act through all of it, even going as far as texting Machado after the game and apologizing for what Barnes did. And the Boston media is trying to claim that shows poor leadership on Pedroia’s part. I honestly don’t know which is worse.

The Pirates are calling up Gift Ngoepe
Which will make him the first African born player in MLB history. And his story is amazing. If you have the time look up his story over on MLB’s website.

Is an absolute beast. He has hit 11 HRs and amazingly 8 of them have been against the Reds. No hot take, just, damn. Hope you have him in your fantasy leagues.

Trea Turner hit for a cycle

Making in the second already this season. And cycles are exciting and fun dammit. I’ll fight you if you disagree.

The new 10 Day DL
It seems to me that we have more players on the DL now than ever before. I attribute this to the new 10 day format compared to the previous 15. Its much easier to put someone on rest for 10 days, especially if you have an off day or two, than to shelf someone for almost 2 weeks. Add to that the 7 day concussion list and there are more options available for managers for keeping their stars running the entire length of the season which is only a good thing. The commissioner may be ass backwards about some things (relievers for example) but this is one thing he’s certainly getting right.

The Detroit Tigers
Are going to have to average 10+ runs for the season to remain a winning ball club. The bullpen is an absolute disaster. They scored 9 runs in an inning on Tuesday night and I wasn’t comfortable they’d be able to lock it down until the last out was made.

Andrew Mark Wilhelm is a professional Sound Engineer/Designer, and amateur photographer, writer, musician who recently relocated from California to Rochester, NY. Born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit has made Andrew an avid fan of all things Detroit but nothing more so than his beloved Detroit Tigers. Every year he tells himself he won't drink the Lions Kool-Aid, and every year winds up heartbroken come January. A Spartan by heart, and a Golden Grizzly by degree, you can catch his (almost) weekly Hot Takes every Hump Day here at The Turf.
