The NFL has done its best to steal the spotlight. First was the Aaron Rodgers saga: “will he stay, will he go?” Then we got Tom Brady un-retiring after 40 days in the desert (or in this case, with Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford). No offense to “the shield“, but it’s baseball season.
Sure, we had to sit and wait for 99 days, painfully watching as the owners and MLBPA haggled over all sorts of things. But in the end, they found enough common ground to get back to work. (Sidebar – could you imagine if our government ever managed to find common ground about anything?) And now that players have reported to camps, the moves are coming fast and furious.
Trying To Keep Up
Seriously – the floodgates opened with the news of Carlos Rodon, who took his talents to the Bay Area. Since then, the flurry of moves has been constant. Many have been fairly quiet, relatively mild deals (whether free-agent signings, extensions, or trades), while others have been coined “blockbusters“. It’s an uphill battle to keep track of everything. You can’t help but get jazzed about the prospect of a big name landing on your favorite team’s roster. The possibilities are endless, and the excitement for Opening Day is building.
Part of me is wondering if guys like @JeffPassan, @Ken_Rosenthal, Buster Olney, and Bob Nightengale ever sleep anymore. After all, despite all the news of guys on the move, there are STILL some prominent players who have yet to find homes:
- Freddie Freeman
- Anthony Rizzo
- Albert Pujols
- Carlos Correa
- Trevor Story
- Kris Bryant
- Michael Conforto
- Zack Greinke
- Kenley Jansen
- Greg Holland
There are plenty more names on the list. Heck, at the current pace of business, it’s likely some of the names above will have signed somewhere by the time this article is published. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Keep It Coming
I won’t say I’m “stalking” my Twitter feed, but I’m close. As a Mets fan, it’s already been a tremendously exciting offseason with plenty to be excited about. I’d love it if they’d land a couple more pieces before the dust settles, so I’m looking forward to whatever else is in store between now and Opening Day on April 7th. Until then, check back here for additional updates and enjoy the chaos!
