Can We Put Luka ‘The Don’ in the MVP Conversation Now?

Estimated Reading Time: 3 Minutes

Dark horse candidate? Yes. Certainly, when names like Lebron James, Damian Lillard, Steph Curry and Joel Embiid are flying up and down NBA courts, most assuredly placing their teams in playoff spots. But Luka Doncic may have just crept into the conversation.

What we saw from Doncic Tuesday night vs Boston is what we have been seeing from him for 2+ years now. He’s clutch when it counts. And when the game is on the line, you want the ball in the hands of your playmaker.

If that step back three with 15.3 left on the clock wasn’t clutch enough for you, here is an even harder step back dagger that sealed the win for the Mavs Tuesday night.

I know, I know, two impressive shots in one game does not an MVP make.

Here’s one from the bubble last year.

And here’s one from 2018.

Here is one from the Liga ACB in Spain.

The guy is a clutch shot highlight reel!

Doncic is putting up MVP numbers

When you break it down past MVP winners have averaged 26.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 5.6 assists. Currently, Luka Doncic is averaging 27.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 8.3 assists. Those are MVP numbers. Take into account that the Mavs currently sit at 15-15 one spot out of the playoff race in the West.

Add onto that the fact that Dallas has been the hardest hit teams as far as COVID goes this season. In January, the team was down 5 players due to health and safety protocols. They lost 6 straight during that stretch. Kristaps Porzingis missed the start of the season due to injury.

Yet here we are. One spot out of the playoff picture. If the Mavericks earn a spot in the playoffs, I’m not sure how you don’t make the case for Luka Doncic as MVP. He has been the constant in a very up and down season for the Mavs, and maybe it’s time we start talking about him in the MVP conversation. Next up for the Mavericks is an east coast road trip that starts Thursday against the 76ers and then the Nets. Let’s see what kind of clutch players Luka ‘The Don’ has in store for us when the Mavs take on the best of the best.
