NBA Opening Week and I Miss D-Wade

Estimated Reading Time: 10 Minutes

It’s so hard to say good-bye to yesterday

Dwyane Wade played his last game in the NBA the on April 10, 2019. All of the United States was full of emotion. Much like his skillset and overall game, his exit was also a smooth one; including being escorted into his last game by a tear jerking tribute sponsored by Budwiser. I’m not going to lie, I already knew I was going to squirt a few out so I decided to step away and view this in the bathroom. So I did and I admittedly shed 2 tears. Shut up.

I really don’t know how to describe such emotion. A new season without Dwayne Wade is odd and hard to move forward. I’ll let these Boyz II Men lyrics describe my feelings because they really capture the cry of my heart.

How do I say goodbye to what we had?
The good times that made us laugh
Outweigh the bad.

I thought we’d get to see forever
But forever’s gone away
It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday .

I don’t know where this road
Is going to lead
All I know is where we’ve been
And what we’ve been through.

And if we get to see tomorrow
I hope it’s worth all the wait
It’s hard to say goodbye to yesterday

And I’ll take with me the memories
To be my sunshine after the rain
It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

And I’ll take with me the memories
To be my sunshine after the rain
It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

Ok, now that we have addressed my loved for 90’s R&B, let’s take a look at highlights from Dwayne Wade’s storied career.

#10. Dwyane Wade buys a church for his mother, Jolinda Wade.

Ok, just keep in mind when reading this. To me, Dwyane Wade is not only an iconic athlete, but a saint of a human being. The child-like faith and belief in his mother, when times were at their darkest, was something of amazement to watch from the outside. The public show of forgiveness and healing between their relationship was impressive to say the least. Obviously, this action is more than a moment, but let’s just say the number 10 moment is this moment of joy for Wade.

“This is tears of joy,” he said, beaming. “Tears of joy for my mother. I respect my mother so much, from the life that she used to live and to see her today in the life that she lives. I’m so proud of her,” Dwyane Wade told The Associated Press. “Everybody thinks I’m the miraculous story in the family. I think she is. I think what I’ve done means I’ve been very blessed, but she’s been more than blessed. She’s been anointed.”

From the moment I read that Wade purchased a church so that his mother can can continue her calling I knew he would be my favorite player.

#9. Full Court Ally-oop to LeBron.

Yo, what? Ok…… When I watched this I was amazed. I have never seen a play like this on the court. I’ve only witnessed this type of connection on the gridiron between a Quarterback and a Wide Receiver. This wasn’t the last time long range ally-oops between Wade and LeBron would happen. In fact, the Miami Heat had drawn up plays for 3/4 court ally-oops off of jump ball situations. Specifically for Wade and Lebron. I’ll say that again, DRAWN UP PLAYS FOR 3/4 COURT ALLY-OOPS.

#8. The Circus Shot moments

These shots were pretty standard in Wade’s repertoire. Moments when you just think, “oh, of course D-Wade made a shot over his shoulder, moving away from the basket…while being fouled.” It sounds ridiculous just to type, but it was even more fun to watch. Yet we took them for granted.

D-Wade was so smooth with these tough shots. He made them look easy. He was like Derrick Rose but with the knees.

#7. Wade’s buzzer beater in double overtime to beat the Bulls.

Vintage wade. Smooth, sneaky, stealth, sly, aware, clutch, finisher. Again, Wade wore many masks. But if you turned your back, he will turn into a thief and a killer before the sound of a buzzer or even in a flash.

Wade is also no stranger to clutch shots, buzzer beaters and finishing a game. He’s even had a buzzer beater recently against the Golden State Warriors.

#6. The Big 3 announcement party.

On July 8, 2010 LeBron James made “The Decision” to take his talents to South Beach and join Wade and Chris Bosh to make the Big 3. On July 9, 2010 this party happened. The party that sent the rest of the world into a hating frenzy. People hated this connection and thought it was the start of something terrible in the NBA. Superstars joining forces to dominate. It turns out that even they had loftier goals in mind for their time together as well. They ended up winning not 1…. not 2… ok just two championships. It was an impressive run littered with highlights and acrobats.

After already winning a Championship with Shaq in 2006, Wade knew what opportunity was presenting itself. It was a crucial moment for Wade’s career. Even though they didn’t live up to their own expectations, it was still such beautiful thing to watch and I know this moment meant so much to him. Not many people get to play professional sports with their best friends.

“It’s still surreal, man,” Wade said. “Me, Chris and ‘Bron. We ready. We want to go to the gym now.”

#5. This dunk on Anderson Varejao…. Never gets old

This is his top dunk to me because he leaves Varejao on his back looking up at his feet. Again, a gridiron aspect that Dwyane Wade has brought to court. Wade is 6’4″ and he has never backed down from anybody. He’s thrown down on some great defensive big men. Guys like Kevin Garnett, Al Horford, Jermaine O’Neal, Kevin Garnett (again) and who could ever forget the time he cabbage patched on Kendrick Perkins (so disrespectful and I love it.)

Wade had a gift for splitting double team defenders with the grace of a ballerina and soar through the paint and violently smash on anyone in his way. It was art.

#4. With the 5th pick in the NBA draft, Miami Heat select Dwyane Wade from Marquette University.

In 2003 a star was born, a savior to a docile sports city. Without Wade being drafted by the Heat I’m sure Miami would have never won a championship. I am very confident of that fact. For this I think this moment has meant more to the city and Heat fans alike than it does Dwyane Wade.

#3. Top 25 Lebron and Wade moments.

It was high flying, it was action packed, it was slash and flash, it was chemistry, it was electrifying, it was poetry in motion, it was art, and it was never to be seen live again.

Please take a moment to watch these highlights and appreciate what we witnessed happen. It will never happen again. I don’t think you will have two players ever on the same wave length as Lebron and Wade were in their time together in Miami. Thanks for the memories, Flash.

#2. Dwyane’s first championship and NBA Finals MVP

Dwyane sure was something special in his first finals appearance. Pat Riley and the heat brought in a past his prime but still very serviceable, Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq really helped Wade round out his game, and gave him that big man compliment that just wasn’t present in 2006.

So with Wade getting to the top he didn’t shy away from the challenge. He actually became the the Finals MVP while by posting the 3rd highest stat line for anyone playing in their first Finals series. Wade posted a stat line worthy of the finals MVP (34.7 Points Per Game, 7.8 Assist Per Game, 3.7 Rebounds Per Game).

After Wade and the Heat fell 0-2 game deficit to the Mavericks, Flash really turned it on and never looked back. Wade averaged 40 points per game in the next four games, and those turned out to be the final games of the series. D-Wade and the Heat stormed back to beat the Dallas Mavericks 4-2 in the series.

#1. The dude Married Gabriel Union and is quietly one of the best dads.

It’s no secret that Dwyane has brought the football to the court in different long passes and dunks. However, he really out kicked his coverage on this one. Gabriel Union-Wade is a superstar. Dwyane is aight.

It’s also no secret his first marriage was a nightmare to say the least. It felt like every other month his ex-wife was suing Wade or Dwyane’s lawyer or her lawyer or Gabriel Union. It was/has been madness. Dwyane and Gabriel have been amazing through the whole ordeal. They have truly been a role model for many couples in the world. Gabriel Union-Wade and Dwyane Wade welcomed their first child to the World recently. Child birth is a feat in its own but they persevered through troubling times and stuck side-by-side through negative results. Union-Wade says she didn’t care to have Kid’s before falling in love with her step sons.

Speaking of sons… One of Wade’s best moments, from the outside world looking in, has been his relationship with his sons. I aspire to be half the father that he is someday. Constantly in support of his sons, for instance he recently showed support for his son Zion, who at 11 years old choose to participate in Miami Beach Gay Pride. Also, not to be forgotten along with FULL custody of Wade’s 3 sons and his daughter, Dwyane and Gabriel also have been pivotal in raising Dwyane’s nephew, Dahveon Morris.

Thank you for the memories, Flash! And thank you for doing the most and the best on and off the court!
