It’s the hap-happiest season of all, y’all. Christmas is one of my favorite days of the year, but not because of the presents or constantly being asked if I want more food. I get to watch 5 basketball games with my dad while my nieces ask me if they can change the channel and I kindly tell them to f*ck off. Kidding, I would never do that…
Here’s what we’ve got to look forward to and where/when you can watch! Consider this your Christmas Day Basketball Guide.
1. Boston Celtics at Toronto Raptors
When: 12:00 PM EST
Where: ESPN
I feel like the NBA including Toronto in its Christmas day lineup is kind of like Leonardo DiCaprio winning the Oscar for The Revenant. DiCaprio should have won by the time he actually won (hello, have you ever seen What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? or The Departed or Django Unchained etc. etc.?) but maybe The Revenant wasn’t all that. The Raptors should have been included the past few seasons, especially last year – you know, when they won the championship. But this year, without Kawhi, it feels like it’s a little too late.
I feel similarly about Boston being included, now that they’re without Kyrie Irving. Last year, I would’ve been all about this match-up. This year…okay, obviously I’m still going to watch it.
2. Milwakuee Bucks at Philadelphia 76ers
When: 2:30 PM EST
Where: ABC
Now we’re talking. Steve and Danny wrote a great piece about how the East may finally be able to hang with the west, and they featured both of these teams and for damn good reason. Embiid trash-talking, Giannis mean-mugging, Ben Simmons experimenting with his perimeter game – will he or won’t he?!
All jokes aside, this is hopefully going to be an excellent match-up. Giannis seems to be unstoppable (calling him as MVP again this year). This game is likely to be a preview of this year’s Eastern Conference Finals, and I have no doubt both teams are going to bring out all the stops.
3. Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors
When: 5:00 PM EST
Where: ABC
This game is going to suck. I’m still going to watch it, but if there was one game I didn’t watch it would be this one. Even before the Warriors lost 90% of their team to injury I would’ve said this game was going to be an odd one as they’d already lost Durant to Brooklyn and Thompson to an ACL injury last season. Meanwhile, James Harden is on an absolute tear averaging 40.2 points in the last ten games.
I wish the NBA could replace the Warriors with the Jazz or Mavericks, but I can’t get everything I want, now can I?
4. Los Angeles Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers
When: 8:00 PM EST
Where: ABC, ESPN
This game is so big that it’s being televised on both ABC and ESPN. This is the game people are gonna put down their new gadgets for. The top two teams in the west going head to head. Beyoncé and Jay-Z will probably be there. Anthony Davis, LeBron James, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard will definitely be there. Fingers crossed Leonard plays despite load management, but I think he will. C’mon, it’s Christmas!
5. New Orleans Pelicans at Denver Nuggets
When: 10:30 PM EST
Where: ESPN
When this game was announced over the summer, I was pretty excited about it. Zion Williamson and Nikola Jokić? Yeah, sign me up. But now that Williamson is injured with no set return date and Jokić is somehow looking more out of shape than he looked last season, I’m not too pumped. The Joker has been looking much better in the past few games, though, so maybe he’ll surprise me. I hope so. Otherwise, this is the perfect game to have on in the background while my mom and I pop open our third bottle of wine.
Happy holidays from all of us at The Turf!
