Matthew Stafford Is A Hall Of Famer: Fite Me

Estimated Reading Time: 2 Minutes

This is apparently shocking to some people, but Matthew Stafford should be a lock for the Hall of Fame. Let’s ignore for a second that Hall Of Fame’s are dumb, and just acknowledge that this is a silly debate because he’s in. You don’t have to even take my word for it if you don’t want.

“But he never has had an MVP vote”

And? Your point? You know why Matthew Stafford has never had an MVP vote? Because the Detroit Lions SUCK. And players on losing teams in frigid Midwestern towns that American likes to shit on don’t get accolades unless they are generational talents. It’s just a fact. Ask Calvin. Or Barry. But QBs are judged too heavily on wins and losses, so Stafford has never gotten consideration for MVP. Or All-Pro. Even though he proved on multiple occasions that he was the only thing keeping the Lions from going 0-16 every damn year.

“It’s a passing League now so his stats are inflated”

Did you know at this very moment, Stafford is 12th all time is attempts, 12th all time in passing yards and 11th all time in completions? He’s also SECOND all time in pass attempts per game and THIRD in completions per game. Fourth all time in passing yards per game. Responsible for throwing the ball to the best two receiving campaigns in history. Oh, and since he entered the league, no one has lead more comebacks than Matthew Stafford. Hell, he just did it in the Super Bowl.

“He’s not the best of his generation”

You’re right, he’s not. But if that’s the requirement, then the Hall should be a lot smaller than it is. I think the reason this debate is truly happening is no one cares enough about the Lions to watch them outside of their fan base so there are just too many people going off the numbers and not their eyes. Matt Stafford is a gunslinger. He’s a gamer. Gives his all 200% of the time. Can make every single throw there is to make, and doesn’t even have to look where he’s throwing all the time. But to Richard Sherman’s point…. the bar HAS been lowered. The general consensus is Eli, Big Ben, and maybe even Phillip Rivers are all locks to get in. If they’re in, Stafford has to be too. Because if you’re picking a team of those four guys in their prime just based on their arm talent and not their numbers… you’re taking Stafford. And the Hall should too.
