Day 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft is done and dusted. In our Day 1 recap we discussed how the first night seemed to be all about trades and WR. So how would Day 2 fare?
More of the Same
With the second pick of round 2, the Minnesota Vikings… traded their pick to inter-division rivals Green Bay. Green Bay then used that pick to take the best available WR in Christian Watson. No, there’s not a glitch in the Matrix, something very similar happened in Day 1 when the Vikings traded with inter-divison rivals Detroit who pick the best WR in Jameson Williams.
And that wasn’t the only continuing trade. Draft Day 2 saw many teams swapping picks at a furious pace. And even though many people (especially those at ESPN if their graphics packages are to be believed) thought there would be a run on QBs in the second round, by and large the constant selection of WRs continued in the early parts of the evening.
Round 3 finally saw some of the Day 1 favorites finally find homes. Malik Willis had his slide stopped by Tennessee, and Nakobe Dean was finally selected by the Eagles in the third round as well. The later was the more strange slide, and there were multiple outlets reporting that Dean had suffered a pectoral strain that would require surgery and teams were afraid of that. Dean however denies that.
A Bit of a Wild Card
No not, Bill Belichick’s draft choices, though those are strange too. No I’m referring to the steady stream of celebrities, former and current athletes, and foundations that the NFL trotted out to announce picks. Clearly understanding that Day 1 has more appeal than the rest of the Draft, the NFL was doing anything to get eyes on their event. Personally, I feel like those that are going to watch the Draft are only going to be confused and turned off by things like Criss Angel spinning around while escaping a straight jacket but… Vegas, baby? And for every Barry Sanders or Keegan-Michael Key that came out and just casually announced a pick, there was a The Miz claiming the Browns were going to win a Super Bowl. Or, at the evenings most bizarre, Ed Marinaro thinking it was Open Mic Night at the Laughy Factory and doing a quick 5 minute stand up routine before Goodell sent out a PA to ask him to “just read the card.”
The Best Of The Rest
As the rounds progress the focus becomes less about the individual players, and more about teams Draft Grades as a whole. By the end of Day Two, every team had finally drafted a player and the outlooks are starting to take shape. The New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens are having killer drafts. As are the Lions, Packers, and Falcons. Other teams like the Eagles are taking some risks and it’s likely too early to tell. And then you have the Patriots who might pull something they’re reaching so much. Day 3 always tend to feel a bit procedural, but there is always the chance of finding a real steal. (No your favorite team is not finding the next Tom Brady in this years Draft, don’t get your hopes up. )
