Welcome to the charity Thursday Night Football game! Every year one or two of these games gets handed to the “lowly” NFL franchises like the Jaguars and the Dolphins. In hopes to take advantage of early-week TV ratings, the NFL capitalizes by feeding your football hunger with rice instead of filets. The Jags and the Dolphins can’t book a Monday night game three years from now, so that’s why we talk about them on TNF. Even though I just threw an immense amount of shade on both organizations, this should be a competitive football game.
Let’s take a look at the Week 3 showdown between Miami and Jacksonville.
Make no mistake about it, there is a lot of fight and pride in these two organizations. Jacksonville seems to be currently going through what Miami put itself through last year – a lot of serious trades, one of them being Minkah Fitzgerald, an All-Pro Safety to the Pittsburg Steelers. One would understand why people seem to be down on these rosters, but please don’t sleep, as they are quickly becoming dynamic.
Jacksonville sits 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the division and looked extremely competitive in both outings. The Jags took the Titans all the way to a game-winning field goal in the final minutes, and were a few missed offside calls on Jadeveon Clowney from a win.
At the end of the day, turnovers were the difference for the Jags in their last match. If they can minimize the turnovers they have a chance at winning games. Their offense has been clicking and Gardner Minshew and his slew of rookies are firing on all cylinders.
Miami has key leadership and a youthful but talented team. However, sitting 0-2 at the moment and hungry for a win, they may pull that off a W in front of an expected 14,000 people at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville.
The Dolphins also have a veteran presence on the defense with Byron Jones and Xavian Howard at CB. Former New England Patriot Kyle Van Noy has sparked well for the Dolphins. Miami held New England to a close game in Week 1, and really put up a fight in Week 2 against early division favorite Buffalo Bills. The combination of Mike Gisicki and Devante Parker along with Fitzpatrick’s veteran leadership is dangerous.
Minshew Magic vs Fitzmagic
Is this an AEW Match at TIAA Bank Field or a football game? The journeyman QB Ryan Fitzpatrick seems to make a mark at almost every stop he goes, and trust me, there are a lot of them. Gardner Minshew on the other hand is trying to defy all odds with what seems like the entire world outside of Duval against him. He’s convincing many, including his teammates, that he has the swag it takes to be a superstar. Can he convince the franchise he is a better answer than Trevor Lawrence?
Now, for Ryan Fitzpatrick, his job is to usher in the new era of Tua Tagovailoa. We all know Fitzmagic, and we know he is going to usher in that new era with style. Against this young Jacksonville secondary, that includes a rookie and two undrafted players still on their undrafted rookie deals, I see a big game for FitzMagic as he looks to show young Tua how to light it up. Oh, and Fitzgerald had this to say to Minshew:
Minshew Magic is determined to win. He really has to have a strong season just to stop Jacksonville from using draft capital to go after Trevor Lawrence, if Minshew were to play them out of that draft position. So bombs away Gardner! Fitzmagic will be airing it out, so I bet Minshew Magic will look to match his efforts.
I’m thinking this game is going to be an air show believe it or not. Fantasy focus is on DJ Chark and Devante Parker. We all know Ryan Fitzpatrick will throw it over the yard and Gardner Minshew appears to be dealing dimes early as well. Chark and Parker will be the beneficiaries of air attack. They should score high in PPR leagues and I expect 2 touchdowns between them.
Happy Thursday Night Football to everyone. Check in next Wednesday for the Denver Broncos at New York Jets TNF Preview.
