Emotions were high heading into the AFC championship game. And one, widely beloved and hated QB walked in with a ton of swagger:

 The First Half

Coming into this matchup of high flying offenses, you would think that this matchup of the number one seeded Kansas City Chiefs and the number two seeded New England Patriots would be a shoot out. However, the first half was a bit of a different story with defense being the key.

The Pats started out strong with a very long drive eating up the majority of the first quarter clock. Sony Michel topped of the long drive with a short rush for a touchdown.

The story of the first half had really been the Pats combining their balanced attack of the offense with their stifling defense to keep Mahomes in the pocket and literally smother him. Mahomes was sacked 3 times in the first half and most of them were costly sacks either taking them out of field goal range or ending the half with a strip sack of Mahomes. Mahomes and the Chiefs offense finished with just 32 yards of total offense in the first half.

The Pats made a beautiful 2 minute drive to end the half with a Tom Brady to Phillip Dorset connection. Brady finished the half 12-17 for 146 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. Michel finished the half with 19 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown.

The Second Half

Chiefs received the kickoff in the second half and took complete advantage. Mahomes hit Sammy Watkins with a beautiful 54 yard deep pass to set up a 12 yard Mahomes to Kelce touchdown.

Chiefs were clawing back into the game with some life. After a 3rd quarter field goal for the Patriots, the Chiefs answered with a passing touchdown from Mahomes to Williams, following a long a connection between the two as well.

Tom Brady and Sony Michel drove down the field, scoring on 4th and inches from outside the 15 yard line. The score was 24-21, Pats.

The second half shows to be a a tale of two stories as Damien Williams is one upping Sony Michel and finding the endzone, as well as, making key plays. Williams scored once more to go up 21-17 on the Pats.

This was the moment for Mahomes to do what Brady has done his whole career. With 3:50 seconds left on the clock, Mahomes executed a drive down the field connecting with Sammy Watkins for a deep pass down to the 1 yard line.  He set up yet another Damien Williams score, this time on the ground.

Patriots get the ball back with 2 minutes left and 3 time outs. Brady showed can still be Brady. Brady hit Gronkowski on 3rd and 5 with a monster catch. That catch brought them down to the 6 yard line and Burkhead punched the ball into the endzone from there. Brady and company took 6 plays to get the ball into the enzone and left the Chiefs with 39 seconds and 1 timeout. Score was now 31-28 Patriots.

With 39 seconds, Mahomes had one more chance to out do Brady. Mahomes made a series of throws to get his team down to the 20 yard line. With 11 seconds left Chiefs sent on Harrison Butker for a 39 yard field goal to tie the game and he nailed it. The score became 31-31 into overtime.

After winning the coin toss, the Patriots elected to receive the ball first. They drove down the converting a few nice plays including a 15 yard 2nd and 9 to Edelman as well as a 3rd and 10 to Gronkowski to put them at the 15. A couple more Burkhead runs has drove the Pats down to the 2. Burkhead scores from the 2 and sends the Patriots to the Super Bowl. Mahomes never touched the ball in OT. Congrats to the Pats
