Joseph Dalfonso invited his Turf colleagues over for a Virtual Super Bowl Potluck.

The Turf Sports Virtual Super Bowl Potluck

Estimated Reading Time: 12 Minutes

It is a beautiful morning indeed Wolverine, it is indeed.

I feel like a kid on Christmas morning knowing that the Super Bowl is tonight and I’ll get to watch Tom Brady and the Patriots go for their sixth championship. I could hardly sleep last night. Just too excited to get to the game.

Super Bowl Sunday is like a Christmas to me. There’s time spent with family and friends, a gigantic spread of delicious food, and the gift of the crowning of a champion. It truly is a blessed day.

My Favorite Super Bowl Memory

My favorite Super Bowl memory was when I was 11 and the Patriots beat the then St. Louis Rams for their 1st Championship. Unfortunately, it was a school night so I was sent to bed before the game ended. Being the rebel that I am, I never went to sleep. Instead, I sat on the top of the stairs and listened to the broadcast on the TV. All of a sudden I heard my father let out a non-verbal scream followed by “It’s Good.” I don’t think I had ever heard him so joyful. I can still hear it today. When he came to my room to “wake me up” and tell me that they won, I had to pretend I didn’t already know.

My Favorite Super Bowl Dish

While I was living at home, my mother would always make this huge Super Bowl spread. We’d have huge hoagie-style sandwiches, wings, mozzarella sticks, veggies w/ dip, chips w/ dip, and various other snacks. I loved it all. However, nothing beats buffalo chicken at the Super Bowl. Doesn’t matter if it’s a wing, a Mac and cheese, or a dip. If it’s some type of buffalo chicken, it is king.

What I’m Most Excited For In Super Bowl LIII

When it comes to the Super Bowl this year, I am most looking forward to seeing Brady and Belichick under the bright lights for a record 9th time. Their run has been unprecedented. Them being in the Super Bowl never gets old. Their careers are also slowly coming to an end, so seeing them again in the big game is extremely special. I basically grew up watching them play in this game and this could potentially be the last time I do.

My Super Bowl LIII Prediction

Like every Super Bowl the Patriots have played before, it’ll come to the final drive. With this most likely being Gronk’s last game, I see him going full Gronk mode, spiking the game winning touchdown through the dome. I also think a Patriot not named Brady throws a touchdown and Brady has 1 reception, making up for the dropped ball last year. Patriots win another nail-biter 35-31.

Now I couldn’t have all this Super Bowl fun by myself, so I invited other Turf Writers to a virtual potluck. Here’s what they had to say.

Ned Donovan

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

Halyards Bar in Brooklyn exploding as Malcolm Butler intercepted the ball in the Seahawks game to clinch the Super Bowl. I’ve never seen anywhere erupt like that in my life.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

I’m a simple person. Give me a good Chicken Wing and I am 100% happy.

What He is Most Excited For In Super Bowl LIII

I haven’t been watching this season, so my expectations are insanely low, since I know practically nothing of what’s been going on. Excited to feel like a casual fan.

Super Bowl LIII Prediction

Patriots 35 Rams 17

Dave Bolton

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

Probably the moment that one of the large men pushing against other large men to protect the good-looking Quarterback realized that he was able to actually able to touch the ball and picked it up and ran with it towards the opponent’s goal line. Can’t remember which Super Bowl it happened in, but I am sure it has occurred more than once.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish:

I am partial to chicken wings, provided they are served in a bowl or dish that reflects the day in question. For example, I will be eating my Super Bowl LIII wings out of my Ben & Jerry’s bowl (purchased in Vermont), signifying a New England appearance in Atlanta. While wearing an LAFC soccer jersey.

What He Is Most Excited For In Super Bowl LIII

This is a tough one. Probably the airing of the Stella Artois advert starring The Dude and the end of Maroon 5’s halftime show.

Super Bowl LIII Prediction:

One team will win, the other will not. If New England wins, then I predict destruction of property and an increase in the overall smugness level. If LA triumphs, then I predict destruction of property and a bout of collective amnesia that the game ever happened at all.

Ryan Kelly

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

Spoiled Patriots fan checking in, so there’s a few to pick from. But it’s gotta be the Malcolm Butler interception to clinch the win against the Seahawks a few years ago. They went from a guaranteed loss to a guaranteed victory in like 4 seconds. I can’t remember another time watching any game where a single play actually flung me out of my seat.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

Buffalo chicken dip and it’s not even close.

What He Is Most Excited For In Super Bowl LIII

The adult in me is excited to see the Pats go for a sixth ring. The child in me can’t wait to see how/if Spongebob’s “Sweet Victory” song from the Bubble Bowl is incorporated into the halftime show.

Super Bowl LIII Prediction.

The Patriots always play close games in the Super Bowl, regardless of the opponent or the spread. My head tells me that the Rams have more talent, especially on D, but when the hell do I ever go with my head.

My gut tells me two things: The Pats win a nail-biter, 33-29. And Gronk has a monster performance in what will be his last game before he retires.

Chris Plonka

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

Has to be the 2016 comeback. After being so low most of the night, that high, surrounded by family, was remarkable. Hugging, crying, so much passion.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

Buffalo Wings. No contest.

What He is Most Excited For In Super Bowl LII

I’m just excited to watch Brady and company ball out. You never know when the last one will be so I’m going to enjoy this while I can.

Super Bowl LII Prediction

If the Pats can play the same kind of game they did in the AFC Championship and minimize Donald and Suh, they have a strong chance. They’ve only let 3 sacks to interior linemen all year, and two came against the Texans in Week.

Patriots 31-28

Tristan Tierney

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

Watching the Giants whoop Tom Brady in Super Bowl XLII.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

Chips and queso always.

What He Is Most Excited For In Super Bowl LIII

I’m most excited to see a gridiron football game between the young and the old guys.

Super Bowl LIII Prediction

24-21 Rams

Sarah Jane Schostack

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

Watching Jerome Bettis win his only Super Bowl in 2006. I was The Bus’s biggest fan in the world, hands down. When we finally got him a Super Bowl ring in his last season and he announced his retirement immediately, I cried like the 15 year old girl I was.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

Chili, over the years my family has had parties or just watched the Super Bowl for just us and somehow, we always come back to chili. It’s a constant food for us as comfort and also function.

What She Is Most Excited For In Super Bowl LIII

Honestly, the chili. My dad has texted me about it twice this week. We do talk about other things. I promise.

Super Bowl LIII Prediction

The Patriots. Only because I write with too many Mass-holes here at the Turf and if I say anything else without a damn good argument, my life will be hell come Sunday

Ryan Mattot

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

Watching the “helmet catch” with a room full of Pats fans.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

Home made Chicken Wings

Commercials?

Super Bowl LIII Prediction

Pats come back to win in the final 2 minutes like they always do (except for when they play the Giants. BURN!)

Justin Colombo

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

I tend to be a quiet Super Bowl spectator. I don’t yell a lot, I usually just watch while internally screaming. Such was the case in 2014. When Jermaine Kearse made his miraculous catch and effectively set the Seahawks in position to win another ring, I was in shock. The people around me were losing their minds and then turning to me and saying “I mean, what else can you do? That’s insane.”

And then Malcolm Butler picks off Russell Wilson in the endzone (thanks Pete Carroll), and I laid on the floor of my friend Josh’s apartment for what felt like an eternity as my skeleton returned to my body.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

Pizza with Ranch dressing. Get into it. But also, my dad makes sausages and those remind me of home. So those too.

What He Is Most Excited for In Super Bowl LIII

I’m excited to see salty Saints fans on Twitter during the game. Not because I’m petty or anything, Saints fans are just very good at Twitter.

Super Bowl LIII Prediction

2001: Patriots 20, Rams 17

2019: Patriots 20, Rams 17

Andrew O’Neill

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

My favorite Super Bowl memory was in the moments immediately following New England’s victory over the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI.  It was Tom and Bill’s first one together, and came about after Brady was thrust into the lineup following an injury to starting QB Drew Bledsoe in a Week 2 game versus the New York Jets (a sideline hit by Mo Lewis that effectively changed the NFL narrative forever).  What I will never forget is in the on-field celebration after the game, Brady with his hands on Bledsoe’s shoulders, shaking him and saying “We did it!” and Bledsoe with a look on his face like “FML.”  Even through all the confetti, all Bledsoe could see was the writing on the wall.  And he was right.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

My favorite Super Bowl dish is beer.

What He Is Most Excited for In Super Bowl LIII

What I’m looking forward to most this year is to see how awkward Tom and Bill are celebrating with each other after the game.  It might be the same conversation Brady had with Drew Bledsoe after they beat the Rams 18 years ago.

Super Bowl LIII Prediction

Patriots 24, Rams 20

Andrew Wilhelm

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

Watching Elway win his first Super Bowl. My aunt was from Denver so I was a bit of a Broncos fan growing up. It’s the first Super Bowl I remember watching in its entirety. Terrell Davis could run, man.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

Wings.

What He Is Most Excited For In Super Bowl LIII

The Old School vs New School storyline. And Tony Romo

Super Bowl LIII Prediction

Rams 24 Pats 17

Jamie Amos

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

I was bartending in NYC during the Super Bowl in 2014. I’m from Washington and the Seahawks were playing the Broncos. The place I worked was more of a stuffy restaurant and they didn’t let us turn on the sound but I watched anyway. There were other people from Seattle there and it was fun to share the absolute whooping the Seahawks delivered with them. I didn’t get to drink, though.

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

Nachos, dude. Or any vessel for dip.

What She Is Most Excited For In Super Bowl LIII

I don’t follow the NFL too regularly, I’m a basketball girl. But I live in Los Angeles, so it’s been cool to watch how excited people here are. The city changes when one of our teams is in the championship.

Super Bowl LIII Prediction

Just because I don’t follow the NFL doesn’t mean I’m immune from being f*cking sick of the Patriots. Rams, PLEASE WIN.

Matt Branigan

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

My favorite Super Bowl memory is definitely watching the Steelers beat the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. I was a senior in high school and I watched the game at my house with my buddies and we were going WILD when Big Ben led a game-winning drive downfield and rifled a pass to Santonio Holmes in the back corner of the end zone. I still cannot believe Holmes got his feet down. It was one of the best plays I’ve seen in the Super Bowl, and was certainly the best Super Bowl game I’ve seen in my lifetime. I also remember jumping through the roof when James Harrison picked off Kurt Warner and ran it 100 yards to the house to put the Steelers up 17-7 at the half. That play, still to this day, is a Super Bowl record for longest interception return. It was such a good game…I love my Steelers!

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

Oooh this is a tough one, but I think I’m gonna roll with the buffalo chicken dip. It’s just so good.

What He Is Most Excited For In Super Bowl LIII

I am just excited to see a good game between two very good teams. I am especially excited to see what the “pivotal play” is going to be this year. The play that everyone will be talking about – what will it be this year? How creative will Belichick and McVay get in this game? Every Super Bowl that the Patriots have played in during the Brady-Belichick era has been decided by no more than 6 points. I am excited and pulling for a close game!

Super Bowl LIII Prediction

The last time the Super Bowl was played in Atlanta was way back on January 30, 2000. The team that won the Super Bowl? The Rams. But this time around, I am going with the Patriots to take home their sixth Lombardi Trophy and tie the Steelers for most Super Bowl wins in NFL history. If Cooper Kupp was healthy, and I knew for certain Todd Gurley was 100% healthy, I actually would have picked the Rams. But also, it is just so hard to bet against Brady and Belichick. I expect the Patriots to run the ball…pressure Goff…attack on offense with short plays, inside the numbers…and I think it will be close and fairly high-scoring. I’ll take the Patriots 31-27, and Rob Gronkowski will be the Super Bowl MVP in what might very well be his last game of his career. What a way to go out.

Mark DiGiammarino

Favorite Super Bowl Memory

I always remember eating my moms homemade chili during the super bowl and knowing it was a special occasion because we were allowed to eat in front of the TV

Favorite Super Bowl Dish

My favorite dish is these wings my mom would make that were soy sauce based but with more sugar. They are delicious.

What He Is Most Excited For In Super Bowl LIII

As a Patriots fan I think it’s seeing Brady in his 9th super bowl and hopefully celebrating his sixth win!

Super Bowl LIII Prediction

Patriots are going to win 31-28
