Hello dear #humptakes readers. Since we last saw each other, Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles caught a TD pass while Tom Brady didn’t, Justin Timberlake wore a Bob Ross painting as a shirt, and the City of Philadelphia may or may not still be standing. But that was Sunday and there are many great articles on this site about those events and more. Let’s talk about other things that happened this week, and maybe a few things to come. And don’t worry, this week isn’t devoted to Blake Griffin or the fact the Pistons are 4-0 since his acquisition and set to play a Nationally Televised game against the Clippers this Friday.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are bad right now. Uncharacteristically bad. They’re even worse in Nationally televised games, falling to 0-8 in such affairs after being blown out by the Rockets on Feb. 3. After the game, LeBron had this to say:
Now, there’s a slight smile when he says “They should take us off every Nationally televised game the rest of the year” as if he’s jokingly saying we’ll win as long as the nation isn’t watching. But you know he also knows that the Playoffs is nothing but games on National TV. Which goes along with him saying a little while back he didn’t think this current team could get out of the first round. There’s something different going on in Cleveland this year, and it runs deeper than the usual “They’ll figure it out post All-Star break.” We’ll see how they fair in their next game, tonight on ESPN. But it doesn’t look good. And the longer it looks bad, the less likely LeBron is wearing Wine and Gold next season.
Who wants an MVP?
Speaking of other players that should be wearing different colors next season… Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles needs to be traded this offseason. It’s the only thing that makes sense for the long term health of the Eagles franchise. “But he just won Philly their first Super Bowl.” (Side note: it was the Eagles first Super Bowl, not their first World Championship like Goodell claimed in his trophy presentation. There were Championship games pre-Super Bowl.) “But Wentz might not be ready at the beginning of next season.” ‘But he’s a good insurance policy.” I hear you saying all these things at me. I don’t care.
The way Foles’ 5-year contract is structured, it becomes null and void if he is still on the Eagles’ roster come February 2019, making him a free agent. It makes all the sense in the world for the Eagles to trade him while they can get something for him instead of losing him for free at the end of next season. And it makes sense for teams in need of a QB to take a shot at absorbing a man on 4 years remaining of a very attractive contract who, oh yeah, JUST WON MVP OF THE FREAKIN’ SUPER BOWL.
Teams who I think should seriously be inquiring into Foles’s availability.
The Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets are seemingly a QB away from completing the puzzle. Minnesota has three very good QBs who are all free agents this offseason and none of them are the guy who just lit them up in the MFC title game. But it’s the Browns who could conceivably put together the best package for Philly. This upcoming draft class is heavy on QBs, but none of them are as good as Foles is right now. So Cleveland can offer up that #1 draft pick to the team who just won the Super Bowl and get the one thing they so desperately need. A win.
Poor Nick Foles. You won the Super Bowl, which means you get to go party with the Mouse. And then make for a situation about as devastating as the feeling every sanitation worker in Philly must have felt Monday morning.
Patriots Doing Patriots Things
The New England Patriots were set to lose both their cooridatorers after losing the Super Bowl. Defensive Coordinator Matt Patrica has left for the vacant Lions job (??????) and OC Josh McDaniels is heading to Indy to lead the Neckbeard and the Colt. Except… no he’s not. Justin has more. I just… wow. WOW. THIS IS WHY NO ONE LIKES YOU PATRIOTS. THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE.
We’re so confused what is and isn’t a catch anymore, not even the Colts can catch a break.
I don’t have a heading for this I just love this image to much to not share it.
The Winter Olympics start on Thursday and I for one could not be more excited, and it’s not just because I just recently saw I, Tonya. I’ve always loved the Winter Games, probably as a by product of growing up in Michigan. And since it has snowboard and skiing halfpipes, Hockey, Speed Skating, and MOTHER F-IN CURLING, it has basically everything I could want. Look for more coverage on the all happenings from PyeongChang South Korea right here on the Turf.
