Having a hard time with this whole “social distancing” thing? Yeah – us too. Especially when it comes to the lack of sports. So, we here at The Turf thought we’d offer a way to help ease the pain and suffering. While we may not have any of the current sports leagues to watch live, there is PLENTY of archive footage available at our fingertips. We’ve scoured the internet and assembled some of the most iconic, noteworthy and remarkable sporting events we could find. We also found some mundane, run of the mill matches and contests, that seemed banal at first watch. However, at this point, we’ll take anything that resembles sports, right? Each day, we’ll feature one of the contests and provide you a link where you can relive the glory, exhilaration, and thrill from the comfort of your couch.
Bet On It
“Nothing is certain but death and taxes”. This is a statement often attributed to Benjamin Franklin. There are others who give credit for these words to others, but nobody argues about the words themselves. Death. And Taxes. I would argue that there are some additional certainties – that the Men’s National Soccer Team from Brazil will qualify for the FIFA World Cup and, in doing so, will be among the favorites to win the tournament.
The FIFA World Cup is an international soccer tournament featuring the top National Teams from around the globe competing for one of the ultimate prizes in sport. It’s been played every four years since 1930 (with two exceptions – 1942 and 1946 – due to World War II). The current format has nations go through three years of qualifications ultimately leading to the final field of 32 compete in the tournament itself (the host nation automatically qualifies). The tournament is the most prestigious and widely viewed sporting event in the world. This is the “granddaddy of them all”, even outpacing the Olympics.
Back to my certainties. Brazil has the distinction of being the country to have won the most World Cup Finals (5), as well as being the only country to qualify for every single men’s tournament ever played. They’ve finished in the top four more times than any other country. They are synonymous with soccer. When people talk about the greatest footballers to ever play – that conversation can’t be had without mentioning Pelé. What about more recent generations you ask? Sure – there was Ronaldo (the second most successful goal scorer in World Cup Finals history – not to be confused with Christiano Ronaldo, though he’s pretty good too), and these days there’s a guy called Neymar – you may have heard of him?
Anyway – suffice it to say: Brazil are pretty good, usually. That’s why today’s game can be filed under “DID THAT JUST HAPPEN”? Because, well… it borders on unbelievable.
Today: Semi-Final, 2014 Men’s FIFA World Cup – Brazil vs. Germany
Unbelievable, right? Who in a million years would’ve thought such a result would EVER be possible? What’s more – it happened IN BRAZIL (they were the host country for this tournament). It’s such a mind-boggling result that many consider it to be among the best matches ever played. I don’t think it necessarily makes the lists so much for quality soccer as it does for the shock it delivered around the sport and the world. Here I am almost six years later – still in disbelief.
